Very few things are more destructive to a family than having someone, especially a child, addicted to alcohol or drugs. Addiction can tear apart the very fabric of a family and damage healthy relationships for years or decades. Sadly, their despearate search for help often leaves families feeling alone and without a roadmap to guide them through the process of helping their child. The Addicted Child: A Parent's Guide to Adolescent Substance Abuse was written for these families.
I recommend you first read The Addicted Child book. At the end of this workbook there is a section for "Notes" where you can jot down thoughts, ideas, questions or comments as you read each chapter. Once you finish reading the book you can then complete each section of the workbook. If you have a partner in your relationship please ask them to read the book. As you use the workbook you may wish to re-read certain chapters of the book. Where applicable the workbook will refer you to specific book chapters.
I hope you find The Addicted child and this workbook helpful in understanding and comforting the challenges of adolescent substance abuse. In addition to providing information on alcohol and drugs, the assessment and dagnosis process and treatment options I hope it offers you a ray of hope that recovery is possible for your child and your family.
